Green themed treasure hunt
An atmosphere of excitement prevailed at the Straits Green public park when 81 students enthusiastically took part in the Think Green Treasure Hunt organised by the Eastern & Oriental Berhad and the Consumers Association of Penang recently.
The annual collaboration saw 9 groups of students from SK Tanjung Tokong, SJK (T) Azad and SJK (C) Hun Bin trying to outdo one another at five game stations.
Among the hurdles were nature quizzes and tasks to observe, collect and count items as well as some physical challenges.
The participants were also tested their agility and knowledge on recycling and composting, in line with Think Green’s objective of raising eco-consciousness and awareness among the young students.
After two hours of sweat and fun, the winning team walked away with RM1,000 cash prize as well as a colouring set each while the second and third runners-up took home RM550 and RM330 cash prizes respectively together with a colouring set each.
Penang Agriculture, Agro-based Industry, Rural Development and Health Committee chairman Dr Afif Bahardin was present to give away the prizes.
E&O Property (Penang) Sdn Bhd general manager Zawawi Yusop said it was gratifying to see students benefiting from the year-round Think Green activities.
“The treasure hunt is akin to putting the students to test on their knowledge and skills obtained from the monthly lessons and workshops held under the Think Green umbrella.
“It is also a good platform to see students of different races from three schools working together as a team to complete the challenges given,” he said.
E&O started the Think Green programme four years ago and continues to work closely with CAP and schools in the vicinity of Seri Tanjung Pinang, namely SK Tanjung Tokong, SJK(C) Hun Bin, SJK (T) Azad, Tadis Ar-Rasyidin, and later with SMK Tanjung Bungah and SK Pendidikan Khas Persekutuan Pulau Pinang.
Over the years, participating students learned about compost making, garden design and care, building raised beds, growing food, herb appreciation, urban gardening, natural farming, and making DIY planters.
