“You Won’t Fight Alone” is the tagline for Penang Adventist Hospital’s cancer awareness campaign that kicked off in February.

To declare this serious intent, Adventist has roped in 487 volunteers to paint the city purple by tying purple cloth bands around 502 trees in four of Penang’s busiest streets.

Drivers along Jalan Burma, Jalan Cantonment, Jalan Kelawai and Gurney Drive area will not miss the purple bands that added a touch of colour to the roads. This wrap-around last for two weeks.

But the campaign is a year-long project that aims to educate the public on how everyone can lend support to cancer patients and their families and reduce the impact of the cancer diseases on them and the communities they come from.

The volunteers were from Team Prudential, SEGi University, Equator College, Dell, and Adventist College of Nursing & Health Sciences. The Gurney Paragon management team also participated in this awareness exercise which has been dubbed “Paint Penang Purple”, an event supported by the Penang State Government.

Why purple? It is an international guideline to use Purple Cloth as it brings awareness to all types of cancers.

While cancer has been known to be a terminal disease with no cure in sight, Penang Adventist Hospital hopes to deliver the message to the 10,000 lives the importance of cancer prevention and how to manage the illness.

“if you want to touch the future, touch a life”. This saying is in line with Penang Adventist Hospital’s initiative of touching the 10,000 lives by driving home the message on the importance of cancer prevention and early detection.

The hospital hopes to send a ripple effect of cancer awareness across the communities it serves.

The purple ‘ribbon’ tied around the old oak (read: rainforest) trees, so to say, rhymes like a popular song lyric that has been on everyone’s lips.
