The fasting month of Ramadan is just around the corner, so here is our list of places where you can dine without breaking the bank while spending valuable time with the family and friends.
The Light Hotel, Seberang Perai
A delicious spread awaits you daily from May 18 to June 14. At RM110 nett per person, you also get to enjoy a “live” performance by Rayyan Band. Early birds pay only RM88 but discount vouchers are limited, so hurry. On the menu are local favourites such as lamb and various traditional cuisines. Call 04-382-1111 for details.
The Wembley St Giles Premier Hotel
Sample a sumptuous Buka Puasa buffet at the Wembley Café from May 31 to June 14. There will be a delightful spread of traditional Malay dishes that are typically served during Hari Raya celebrations. For those who want variety, there are Chinese and international favourites as well.
Items not to be missed are the hearty bone marrow broth – better known as the “Soup Gear Box” – as well as succulent lamb kuzi with briyani rice and durian desserts. Also on the menu are kampung dishes such as daging masak berlada, sotong masak kunyit, ayam masak lemak cili api, ayam percik and more.

The Four Points By Sheraton Penang
Local delights hog the Ramadhan menu here. They include pasembur pulau mutiara with spiced sweet potato dips, rendang daging minang, burung puyuh goreng tiga rasa, ayam tandoori, ikan mambung berlado and the chef’s signature dish, salmon laksa. Executive chef Nor Ismail Matesa will dish out his braised Moroccan lamb ball in spice tomato sauce and other Arabic inspired dishes such as nasi khabsa, dajaj Mashwi (ayam panggang), Bombay onion pickle, cucumber raita and dhal tadka.

Eastern & Oriental Hotel
At the E&O, treat yourself to a quintessential Malaysian spread this Ramadhan. The ever popular Sarkies restaurant serves traditional Malay fare at its Jamuan Berbuka Puasa buffet from May 17 to June 14 from 7.30pm to 10.30pm at RM166 (adults) and RM83 (children) per head. Book and pay before May 23 to be entitled to an early bird promotion where for every five adults paying the full price, one gets to dine for free.
E&O communication and public relations manager Eileen Chong says the perennial Malay salad, ulam, will be complemented with different types of sambal and sauces. Not to be missed are briyani rice, rendang daging, ayam masak madu and gulai ketam kampung along with slow roasted whole lamb stacked up with satay, roti canai and murtabak, nasi lemak ayam and ikan bakar. G Kelawai’s SPOON
From May 17 to June 14, the theme at the SPOON is Pasar Ramadhan. Take your pick from nine outdoor stalls and an indoor “live action station” that bring you the best of Penang. On the menu are nasi kandar with lamb kurma, beef rendang and kari kepala ikan. Also, don’t miss the Penang nyonya curry mee, mixed satay, Sharwarma and chicken rice. The desserts are the tau foo fah, ice kacang cendol and mua chee (glutinous rice flour and sesame peanut kuih).
The price is RM75 nett per head but in a group of 11, one person dines for free. Call 04- 219-0000 for details.
G Hotel’s Taste Cafe
Take your pick of glocal (global and local) fare at the Ramadhan and Hari Raya buffets at Taste Café. Apart from bubur lambuk, whole roast lamb and barbeque are various items at the Malay Feast Grilled Station. The price is RM125 nett per head from Sundays to Thursdays. On Fridays and Saturdays, when the café throws in the Sup Gear Box, patrons pay RM160 nett each. Call 04-238-0000 for details.
The Royale Chulan Penang
From May 18 to June 13, starting at 7.20pm every day, take a walk down Gourmet Lane at the Royal Chulan. Stalls offering delicious fare line the way from the hotel’s atrium all the way to its Sri Tanjung Café. Load yourself up with sup tulang rawan berempah, pulut kuning kukus kari ayam, cucur kepah berlauk, daging kerutuk, paru goreng berlada, asam pedas ekor lembu and many more. Their chefs have also brought back kambing panggang golek which is marinated with a secret blend of spices and roasted to perfection by executive sous chef Khamarullizad Hassan and his team. For the most affordable Ramadhan buffet, go to the Berjaya Hotel from May 19 to June 13. Adults pay only RM58 nett while children pay RM30 and senior citizens pay RM45.
On the menu are authentic kampung spread with bubur lambuk, sup tulang lembu, sup kambing berempah, nasi tomato, nasi hujan panas, ayam masak ros, daging rendang, sambal udang petai, belitung goreng bercili to name a few. Call 04-220-7373 for reservation and details.

Over 29 days from May 17 to June 14, treat yourself to a range of more than 400 authentic and nostalgic flavours at this hotels Resort Cafe. The dishes at this Ramadhan buffet will be served on a rotation basis so you get a different flavour every night. From May 17 to 23 and from June 11 to 14, all diners pay a special promotional price of RM98 nett each. But from May 24 to June 10, adults pay RM178 and senior citizens pay RM108. Children aged six to 12 pay the usual price of RM98.
