Eden, the garden of paradise where Adam and Even learnt about shame after consuming the apple from the forbidden tree. So goes the story from the Bible.

In Penang, Eden Restaurant had been the only spot for every dating couple especially those who are now between 40 and 70 years old. Eden Restaurant first opened its doors in 1964 at 15 Hutton Lane in George Town. The restaurant served seafood, steak and grilled cuisine to lovers who pined for a romantic candlelight dinner with soft beautiful music with waiters who looked like butlers.

“Back in our heyday, people will be queuing just to get a table at our restaurant,” said Mr. T.K. Hoon, the assistant general manager for Eden Catering.

Eden Restaurant was also very popular with the Royal Australian Air Force officers and expatriates who were stationed in Penang.

If cupid existed, he might have very well resided at Eden Restaurant. For many older Penangites, the then young and blushing brides-to-be accepted proposals of marriage at this very restaurant.

Of course, this place would have seen its fair share of break-ups, make-ups and even shady affairs too. But here, thankfully the walls have eyes but not ears.

There must be many fond memories of Eden Restaurant that many married couples relive their younger days again by patronising the restaurant long after many newer and trendier food outlets make their appearances. Sadly, after 52 long years, the restaurant resigns to its fate and like many of its faithful patrons, the day must come to say ‘adieu’.

However, all is not lost. “We will be rebranding Eden Restaurant to attract the younger crowd,” said Mr. Hoon, who has been with Eden for more than 30 years. “It will be more vibrant and trendier to keep up with the times.”
