Fifty years on, the flame of love continues to burn strongly for Col (Rtd) Ng Kim Boon, 73, and 71-year-old retired school teacher Catherine.
To mark their golden wedding anniversary, they chose to return to a favourite haunt – the Golden Sands Resort in Batu Ferringhi, Penang.
Golden Sands holds a special place in the heart for them – they marked their first year as a married couple at the same resort in 1969 and, over the years, have celebrated their anniversary there a total of 25 times.
Back in 1969, the hotel was just a three-storey building. The Shangri-La Group, which bought the property in 1978, transformed it into the 389-room Golden Sands Resort.
To mark the joyous occasion, newly-appointed resort resident manager Christoph Dueker and his team presented a special wedding anniversary cake to the couple at the resort’s Sigi’s Bar & Grill restaurant.
The happy couple, who were accompanied by their son Alvin, daughter-in-law Dorothy and granddaughters Pauline and Wendy, look forward to celebrating more anniversaries at the resort.
“There’s something in the air that draws us back time and time again,” say the couple who are from Kuala Lumpur.
“Of course we also enjoy the great hospitality, the facilities and the company of the very friendly staff,” they add.
