It took eight tasting sessions over six months, but it was all worth the effort. The chefs at Light Hotel Penang are convinced that they now have a Fish head curry dish that has been fine-tuned to perfection.
Dubbed the “Gulai Kepala Ikan” it is to mark two very special days for Malaysia – the Merdeka and Malaysia Day celebrations. It will be the perfect choice for guests celebrating special occasions or family get-togethers.
“To mark 61 years of independence, it’s only apt that we serve some of our local favourites to pay homage to our culinary offerings,” says general manager K. Raj Kumar. “In the spirit of Merdeka, we are offering the fish head curry, which most of us love, regardless of ethnicity.”
The hotel’s Gulai Kepala Ikan is a spicy and tangy dish that will warm the soul. Its intense aroma will tickle the nostril and tantalise the taste buds.
“Our team took about six months to try out various combinations of the spices and ingredients so we could come up with a good curry base,” Raj Kumar says. “We use the red snapper because it’s fleshy and firm – perfect for curries.”
The hotel gets its supply of fish and other seafood from the market daily. Guests can also pick their choice of seafood from the freezer at the coffeehouse.
Other dishes that will go well with the fish head curry are the prawn sambal, sotong rojak (golden-fried giant squid), crab curry served with mantau (steamed or fried bun), deep-fried ayam kampung, stir-fried kacang botol (four-angled beans) and stir-fried kangkung (water spinach).
The special Merdeka promotion is a serving for four persons. It comes with a hearty portion of fish head curry, two types of vegetables of the day and unlimited serving of Basmati rice for four. It is priced at RM130 per set.
The special promo, which started on Aug 8 and will last till Sept 16, is available from noon to 2.30pm for lunch and 7pm to 10pm for dinner.
