Grand Opening of ENCORE MELAKA

Grand Opening of ENCORE MELAKA

In conjunction with UNESCO’s 10th Melaka World Heritage City Celebration, theatre powerhouse ENCORE MELAKA, presented by Yong Tai Berhad, held its grand opening show on 7 July.

Guests were enthralled scene after scene — legendary names of Melakan history including the Prince of Sumatra, Parameswara and the Melaka tree, and Cheng Ho started the Encore Melaka journey on a high note with stunning scenes of visually-projected ships and drummers. Guests warmed up to the more endearing scenes of the Baba Nyonya dance, the alluring water dance scenes that accompanied the compelling stories of mothers and the passion of Melaka and its people. The audience was also made part of the performance when the performers got off the stage to interact with the guests during a scene that paid homage to the artisans of Melaka. The finale closed the performance with the 200 strong performers bidding farewell to the audience.

From the intriguing facade of the building with arcs of thousands of LED lights and porcelain-tiled exterior, to the overwhelming set-up of the theatre that seats 2,000 people, Encore Melaka astounded guests and immersed them in a performance that engaged all the senses on a 360 degree rotating audience platform. Guests were treated to a magnificent retelling of six stories inspired by Melaka’s harmonious and multi-ethnic identity.

This is director Wang Chaoge’s (2008 Beijing Olympic Games Opening Ceremony ) directorial debut in Malaysia — an impressive, world-class theatre production, an extension of China’s iconic Impression and EncoreSeries, showcasing the history and culture of Melaka onto one stage in 70 minutes.
