Hours after landing in Hong Kong, we were on board the Hong Kong TramOramic Tour that was a nostalgic journey for me having taken a ride along the century-old rail line a decade ago.
Today, the tramways has a new tourist product. It features a unique 1920’s style tramcar with an open top upper deck and a vintage cabin lower deck where you can listen to authentic tales of local life and tram history through personal headsets in eight languages (Mandarin, Cantonese, English, Korean, Japanese, French, Spanish, Russian).
The narration of the true Hong Kong stories and sites of interest were developed with the help of expert city guides, a Hong Kong historian and local tram enthusiasts.
The TramOramic has a capacity for 36 passengers plus a tram captain and a tram attendant dressed in costume. It has free WiFi, on-board videos and a picture gallery comparing past and present Hong Kong as well as a heritage corner with genuine tram souvenirs and the history of the 114-year-old tram system.
The feeling on the open deck affords a spectacular 360° view of Hong Kong’s nightlife as the tram strolls leisurely along the track that extends from the nostalgic Western District through the contemporary financial area and shopping hubs of Hong Kong.
The tour package includes a commemorative TramOramic Golden Ticket, which entitles the bearer to the 1-hour TramOramic tour and also offers him a 2-day pass giving unlimited free access to the Tramways’ regular service to deepen Hong Kong’s exploration and seven thematic journey maps. (available on the website: www.hktramways.com/en/thematic-journeys/) for self-guided tours to interesting sites along the tram lines.
The evening breeze, light music, fine champagne is the setting of a once-in-a-lifetime experience you will never forget. A light drizzle did not deter our enthusiastic media friends from snapping away with their cameras at the street scene and passing trams on the opposite track that is a hand’s length away.
TramOramic (reads Tram Sightsee) is a new thematic tourist product for private and corporate events to celebrate and rejoice. There are six departures daily. Check here for details.
