Langkawi bags 2 PATA 2017 awards

Langkawi hogged the limelight when it won two Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Gold Awards at the PATA Travel Mart 2017 in Macao recently.

Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark (UGG) took the Heritage and Culture Category while Frangipani Langkawi Resort and Spa took the Gold Award in the Education and Training Category.

Tourism Malaysia also clinched a Gold Award in the Marketing Media – Travel Poster Category.

Langkawi was represented by Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) Chief Executive Officer Datuk Azizan Noordin. He received the award on behalf of Langkawi. Tourism Malaysia was represented by its Director General Datuk Seri Mirza Mohammad Taiyab.

The 40th edition of PATA Travel Mart 2017 was hosted by the Macao Government Tourism Office. It has attracted 1,131 delegates from 66 global destinations. Among the delegates were 460 sellers from 252 organisations and 37 destinations, along with 293 buyers from 281 organisations and 51 source markets.

The official opening ceremony on Sept 14 was conducted by Dr. Alexis Tam, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of Macao SAR Government and Chairman of the Macao Host Committee of PATA Travel Mart 2017.

Among those present were Mr. Ip Peng Kin, Chief of Office of Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of Macao SAR Government; Ms Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, Director of the Macao Government Tourism Office; Dr Mario Hardy, PATA CEO; and Mr. Li Jianping, Director of Asia Tourism Exchange Center of China National Tourism Administration.

Ms Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes and Dr. Mario Hardy took turns to present the 2017 PATA Grand and Gold Awards to the winners.

Tourism Malaysia and LADA hosted a dinner to promote the next 41st PATA Travel Mart 2018 which will be held in Langkawi. Both will co-host the 2018 PATA Travel Mart, Asia Pacific’s premier travel trade show, from Sept 12 to 15 at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre.

Azizan is expecting about 3,000 people to visit the 99-island archipelago next year.
