Good local food is aplenty in Pulau Tikus, a bustling commercial and residential district. These are some of where2’s recommendations:

1. Ali Mamak’s Nasi Lemak Goreng

The pioneer of all Nasi Lemak Goreng, the Ali Mamak Stall fries two packet of nasi lemak with chicken slices and cabbage, and top it with a bull’s eye egg. This makes the rice soft and moist adding an immense Malaysian flavour to it.

Address: Jalan Lunas (Opposite the WCC (Women’s Care for Change) office)
Opens 24 hours daily, except on Wednesdays.

2. Bangkok Lane Mee Goreng

This is an elevated version of the good old Mamak Mee goreng with squid in it. The generous amount of squid in a plate will definitely make you go back there for the fried noodles, which takes under 1 minute to be ready!

Address: Seng Lee Coffee Shop, No. 280, Bangkok Lane, off Burma Road
Opens daily from 8.30am to 6pm, except on Mondays

3. Lok Lok

Skewered uncooked food dipped in steaming water describes any lok lok stall. But this stall at the Pulau Tikus market makes eating lok lok a little more special. Sticks of lok lok are arranged around the boiling water at each table. It is strangely extra satisfying just sitting there to eat with family and friends.

Address: Jalan Pasar (at the market)
Opens daily from 6pm to 12am, except on Wednesdays.

4. Nyonya Nasi Lemak

This 25-year-old nasi lemak stall has maintained good business over the years. The stall owner is generous when it comes to giving out spoonfuls of homemade sambal belacan. The rice is usually sold out in less than an hour after the stall opens. Be there early when they open.

Address: Jin Hoe Café, Jalan Cantonment
Opens daily from 8.30am to 9.30am, except on Sundays.

5. Shahnas Nasi Padang

There are not many nasi padang outlets in Pulau Tikus, and this rare stall serves delicious ‘kerabu’. Its sambal is also good.

Address: Hock Kheng Kopitiam, 226A, Jalan Burma.
Opens daily from 9am to 7pm, except on Sundays.
