Langkawi International Laksa Carnival (LILAC) 2016
The fifth edition of one of Langkawi’s signature events, the three-day Langkawi International Laksa Carnival, from 27May at Laman Padi promises again to be a crowd puller.
Laksa is a fusion dish in a form of rice noodles that can be traced back several centuries ago when the Chinese came to the Malay Archipelago. It was then adopted by different people and evolved into a variety of laksa, each with their own unique taste.
In spite of the different versions, laksa basically can be categorised into two types. One is thick and creamy with coconut milk added called the ‘Curry Laksa’ and another which is more refreshing with a hint of sour known as the ‘Asam Laksa’.
Laksa in the northern part of Malaysia is made from fish and ‘buah assam’, simmered and reduced into gravy, which makes the soup slightly sour and lighter in taste. Elsewhere, like in Johor, coconut milk is added, hence giving it a thicker texture.
LILAC 2016 is expected to have a larger crowd since it has garnered a significant reputation. There are many activities you can participate in – ranging from laksa competition, video and photo contests, recipes from international Laksa Masters, to Laksa Eating Competition! Save the date and come taste the sweet, sour, and savoury delicacy.
