Celebrating its 2nd anniversary this year, The Royale Bintang Penang icontinues to be a blend of classic period charm with the very best in contemporary comforts. Located close to the commercial district and the historic port which helped Penang flourish in the 18th Century, The Royale Bintang Penang is a great place to spend the night after exploring George Town, a city filled with history and culture.
Almost two centuries ago, Edward Boustead boarded the schooner Hindustan and arrived at the vibrant shores of Singapore. Being a keen observer with good business sense, Edward Boustead immediately identified Singapore as his new home. In 1828, Boustead & Co was established and became the centre of his business empire. He took advantage of the bustling trade settlement, unrivalled in its strategic location and overflowing business opportunities.
Its core business during those pioneering days was primarily import and export, as well as shipping and insurance. Trade blossomed between the Far East and Europe with the Straits of Malacca as the primary waterway, and Singapore, an important trading post. Edward then expanded to George Town in 1864.
In 1961, Boustead consolidated its various businesses to form a new public listed company known as Boustead & Co. Limited. In 1966, the entity changed its name to Boustead Holdings Berhad and in 1976, the Group became a wholly-owned Malaysian entity.
The Royale Bintang Penang is part of the Boustead Building in Weld Quay, among European-styled trading houses which used to be owned by Germans. Weld Quay, or Pengkalan Weld, is a coastal road on the east side of George Town. It was constructed at the turn of the 20th century, following the land reclamation of the eastern shore that took place between 1883 and 1889 to create a deeper docking bay.
Parts of the hotel house beautifully restored artifacts and the lavishly refurbished building is within easy reach to all major historic sites along the George Town Heritage Trail. Guests are invited to experience the glamour and unparalleled services of this hotel. Complemented by the existing colonial architecture, the place instantly takes you back in time.
