Tohuku Handicrafts exhibition

In commemoration of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, The Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur invited Malaysians to feast their eyes on the traditional craftsmanship of the region resolutely recovering from the disaster. Beautiful Handicrafts of Tohoku, Japan was on view at Penang State Museum recently. The collection of 70 objects embodies the aesthetic philosophy and talent of artisans from the six prefectures that make up the land; namely Akita, Aomori, Fukushima, Iwate, Miyagi and Yamagata. Also well-represented are artists belonging to the Mingei (folk art) movement, whose pieces were greatly influenced by the crafting heritage and cultural spirit of Tohoku. Among their ranks are Keisuke Serizawa and Shoji Hamada, who are recognised by the Japanese government as Holders of Important Intangible Cultural Properties, or Living National Treasures.
