MICHAEL HANRATTY

General manager of both G Hotel Gurney and G Hotel Kelawai shares his experiences on his career beginning in Australia and working in exotic locations like Indonesia, British Virgin Islands, Thailand to finally landing himself in Penang.

“I graduated with a Degree in Science majoring in Pathology and I was working in a laboratory and thought – wow is this the type of work I will always do!!!!

“That night I was talking to my family about it and they all said – hey why not hotels, you’re good with people.

“That was it – I left my job and started taking up a Hospitality Diploma. Part of the course was an internship and I got a part time job as a bellman at the Crown Plaza in Sydney and that is where my love of the hospitality world came from,” said Hanratty.

After three years at the hotel, he answered an advertisement for a job in Indonesia and since then he has always worked aboard.

“I have been lucky enough to work in many countries – Dubai, British Virgin Island, Singapore, Hong Kong, Brunei, Thailand and eventually here in Malaysia.

“Having worked my way up, I have empathy for the staff and not just from the management’s point of view but also the challenges and issues that the staff face daily.

“My advice for all those seeking achievement in their career is to work hard as nothing comes easy.

“When you put your mind to it, you can do anything just like me – pathologist to bellman to General Manager!

His advice for those beginning their careers – “Work with passion, dedication and commitment and you will eventually find it all worthwhile”.
